Florence Nightingale's birthday is celebrated as 'International Nurses Day' on 12 May every year worldwide. The main theme of this day in the year 2019 is "Health for all".
History of nurse day
Dorothy Sutherland, an officer in the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, first proposed to celebrate Nurses Day in 1953. It was announced by US President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was first celebration in 1965. In May (19-74), it was announced to celebrate 12 may of International Day. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was born on May 12, the same day. It was decided to celebrate her birthday as International Nurses Day. Every year on this occasion, the International Nurses Day Kit is prepared and distributed by the International Nurses Council. Since 1965, this day has been celebrated every year by the International Council of Nurses as International Nurses Day. The International Council of Nurses commemorates this day by creating and distributing content of educational and public information of new subjects to nurses on the occasion.
International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world to increase awareness of nursing as a profession and the contribution made by nurses towards health care governance. Nurses are those who meet the local needs of the patients, who have proper knowledge about how to handle the patient properly to improve the physical, mental health of the patients, etc. This is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, The Pioneer of Nursing. The International Council of Nurses observes this day.
National Florence Nightingale Award
The National Florence Nightingale Award is given every year on 12 May. It was started in 1973 by the Ministry of Family and Welfare, Government of India. The award recognizes the meritorious service of nurses. A total of around 250 nurses have been awarded this award so far. The award is given every year by the President of the country. The Florence Nightingale Award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a citation and a medal.
International Nurses Day 2020 Theme
The International Nurses Council has set the theme for International Nurses Day 2020 as "Nursing for Health" with a focus on "the true value of nurses for the people of the world".
